400 year old pub – one of the oldest in Cheshire – closed and open for sale

A historic Cheshire country pub has ceased trading and has been offered for sale.

The Holly Bush Inn in Northwich announced that it has closed its doors to customers after the coronavirus lockdown.

The 17th century pub in Little Leigh announced the “sad news” on its Facebook page on Thursday (May 6th).

It thanked “all of the customers” who had supported the pub over the years and wished them all the best.

The four bedroom property is now on sale on Rightmove for £ 250,000.

A post on the pub’s Facebook page read: “With sad news, The Holly Bush has stopped trading.

“We just want to thank all of the customers who have supported us over the years and wish you all the best.”

The Holly Bush Inn was originally a working farm that housed a pub licensed in the 17th century. This makes it possibly the oldest pub in Cheshire.

Other pubs in the county that date from this period include the 1643 Boot Inn on Eastgate Street in Chester and the 17th century Brewery Tap on Chester’s Bridge Street.

The Holly Bush Inn, seen on the A49 Warrington Road near the Lower Whitley junction, was run by the Cowap family from the late 18th century until 1990.

The pub and the barn, both of which are listed buildings, have been privately owned since 1993.

In recent years the pub has been renovated to restore the traditional thatched roof and provide a larger dining area.

The barns have also been converted into 14 en suite rooms for visitors.

Following the announcement of the closure, members of the public shared their fond memories at the venue.

One user said, “Sorry to hear this. I’ve always enjoyed my stay here. One of the best places I’ve stayed.

“Good luck with your next adventure.”

Meanwhile, another user said, “What a terrible shame. I loved this place once while using it as an overnight stop on a football weekend.

“The accommodations were good and the food was wonderful, so much so that I sent my friends in Manchester a gift certificate for the Holly Bush Inn so they could enjoy it too.

“I am so sorry to hear this message and to send warm wishes to all of those people who have made this the special place it was. Good luck and thank you.”
