A Chester recreational team took mental health first aid training to help their teams get back to work.
The team at The Brio in Chester, Cheshire has attended sessions hosted by Jeff Nield, a Northwich Memorial Court-based swimming instructor and coaching assessor.
This training covers three levels, ranging from having a basic mental health awareness and understanding to learning a detailed plan of action to help people recognize when someone is putting themselves or others at risk. This level of education gives people the knowledge and tools to step into a situation and provide the person with access to the support they need.
Given that employees are returning from vacation and COVID-19 restrictions remain in place, employees believe it is vital for managers to help those who may be more vulnerable right now.
Mark Swaffield, facility manager at Christleton Sports Center and Frodsham Leisure Center, said, “The course was a real eye opener and a great insight into mental health while showing how we can support one another without judgment. Everyone is affected by mental health in one way or another, and the only way we can become more aware of this is to exercise and talk about how we can help. ”

The Brio team said their main goals for running these sessions are to remove the stigma of mental health in the workplace. During the pandemic, they made sure employees knew where to get support if they felt they were having problems, whether by reporting it to their manager who stayed in touch or through the employee assistance program.
The brio also planned activities to help the teams keep in touch, such as: B. virtual coffee mornings for employee training sessions on Zoom. By promoting good habits like taking breaks when needed and encouraging people to speak up when they feel uncomfortable, the team hopes this will help make their place of work a safe place to work.
Lesley Millington, Duty Manager at Rudheath Leisure Center, said, “Excellent workshop from Jeff. It has come to a good time that the limitations are starting to wear off as some of our staff may be struggling mentally with it. The workshop felt safe and Covid Safe. “

The managers enjoyed the courses too. Paul Hesketh, facility manager at Northwich Memorial Court, said, “I thought the course was one of the best I’ve taken since my time at Brio. It was thought provoking and I’ve found that I’ve kept the principles in mind ever since. The trainer did a great job keeping the atmosphere light, especially on some of the heavier subjects. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who has it available. “
Tony Henshall, Head of Fitness and Fitness at Northwich Memorial Court, added, “I really enjoyed the workout and saw a lot of it. It was done online through teams as the buildings were closed at the time and I thought this was a great way to run the course. I’ve already had an opportunity to use the training and I expect it will be used more in the future. “
