According to Cheshire East Council, Crewe’s redesigned historic covered market is almost ready to be unveiled.
According to Cheshire East Council and Market Asset Management – the new commercial operator of Crewe stores – the hall is slated to reopen on May 17th with an official launch on June 21st.
It follows the release of the government’s four-step roadmap to ease Covid-19 restrictions across England and find a way back to a more normal way of life.
Cllr Nick Mannion, Cheshire East Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Regeneration, said, “We have had such positive feedback on the renovation of the indoor market and the reopening seems to be causing quite a stir.
“We can hardly wait for residents and visitors to the city to take a look inside and show them everything that is now on offer – there will certainly be something for everyone!”
Last month it was announced that The Crewe Dog, Wattle & Home, Jordy’s Pizza and Mini Beans Coffee are entering the market hall preparing to welcome customers.
Another six dealers were confirmed with further announcements in the next few weeks.
The Crewe Asian Store will sell fresh fruits, vegetables, rice, legumes, spices and much more, while the Mighty Burger Club will offer customers delicious patty burgers, classic hot dogs and delicious shakes.
Owners Jess Martindale and Dale Evans said, “We are very excited to be part of this great project.
“The new market hall is something we should all be proud to be a part of and have here in our hometown.”
The food offer is complemented by the Casa Mexica with its homemade “absolutely authentic Mexican street food at its best”, while the Street Chef from Nature serves vegan street food that is influenced by Asian, Mexican and European cuisine.
BYOCrewe – a local hub for waste-free, plastic-free alternatives – is also preparing to open and helping to “make the zero-waste movement easier and more convenient for you”.
A “contemporary yet traditional” gentlemanly barber shop, Burton West Barbers offers a variety of cuts and styles in a “relaxed and social setting”.
Hayden Ferriby, Commercial Director at Market Asset Management, said, “It has been great to see the market transforming and we have a fantastic mix of dealers in line, all waiting to welcome customers.
“It is extremely exciting news that we can now set a date for the planned reopening and look forward to the building becoming a vibrant hub in the heart of the city center.
“Our priority remains the safety of our visitors, dealers and employees. So of course we will continue to follow government guidelines on the safe reopening of city centers and review our plans if necessary.”
The covered market will also have pop-up stalls and a regular program of activities and demonstrations. The building can be flexibly opened in the evenings for events, entertainment and other themed activities.
It will initially be open five days a week:
Wednesdays – 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Thursdays – 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Fridays – 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturdays – 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sundays – 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
The indoor market renovation, part of a total £ 50 million investment program in the city center, will play an important role in the repositioning of Crewe as a premier leisure and retail destination.
The Market Hall project is supported by the Government’s Local Growth Fund through Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership.
