Cheshire: Man who drove at over 250 mph on the highway is jailed

A man who drove at over 150 mph on a freeway and drove over a red light in a residential area in Cheshire was convicted.

Nathan Batha pleaded guilty to driving dangerously in Cheshire, not stopping for the police and driving without insurance.

The indictment relates to the 19-year-old’s drive in a black Audi in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 13, 2020.

An officer from the Roads and Crime Department of Cheshire Constabulary spotted the car driving at excessive speed through Junction 17 of the M6 heading north at Sandbach at around 3:50 a.m.

He tracked the vehicle, which reached a speed of over 250 mph before hitting several cones and pulling into a cut off area of the freeway.

The officer had to stop tracking the car for safety reasons after watching it pass and overtake other vehicles at excessive speed.

A colleague from the Roads and Crime Unit who drove an unmarked police car then followed the Audi, as did a police officer from Merseyside.

After exiting the motorway at Exit 21, officers saw the Audi drive at over 105 mph on the A57 Manchester Road in Warrington.

Passed a red light at over 100 mph on the road with a speed limit of 40 mph.

The officer who originally tracked the car was lying in wait with a sting on Manchester Road thanks to his communications with his colleagues.

It was used successfully, with one of the Audi’s tires bursting.

Despite a flat tire, Batha of Watkiss Drive, Rugeley, Staffordshire continued to attempt to flee from officials.

After driving around a roundabout at junction 21 of the M6 in the wrong direction, the Audi he was driving was trapped by officers on the driveway to the north side of the autobahn.

Batha was arrested and interrogated while in custody.

He refused to answer any questions, but since officers had dashcam footage of his driving offenses, Batha was always charged and he had no choice but to admit the allegations.

Batha was convicted at Liverpool Crown Court and imprisoned for 12 months.

Police Constable Chris Jones, who led the driving crime investigation in the Cheshire Constabulary’s Roads and Crime Unit, said: “Fortunately, Nathan Batha’s dangerous driving on the M6 and in a residential area of Warrington has not injured anyone. The consequences of this incident could have been far worse.

“Speed limits exist for good reason – driving at unsafe speeds is one of the leading causes of death on our roads.”
