Cheshire MPs are pushing for government funding for Leighton Hospital

Cheshire MPs are calling on the government to select Leighton Hospital as one of eight in the country benefiting from a multi-billion pound construction program.

Crewe and Nantwich MP Dr. Kieran Mullan, Eddisbury MP Edward Timpson and Congleton MP Fiona Bruce say they wrote a joint letter to the new Minister of Health, Sajid Javid.

It follows Boris Johnson’s announcement last year to expand the program to build 40 hospitals to eight additional locations.

In October, plans were presented for a potential new location for Leighton Hospital, provided funding is secured.

The formal process of deciding which of these locations will be selected is now underway.

Hospitals have been asked to apply for funding, and a final decision is expected to be made in spring 2022.

MPs say they have emphasized that despite a number of one-off investments like new theaters and A&E upgrades, basic capacity challenges remain at Leighton Hospital.

Dr. Mullan, who started a petition to build community support for the campaign, said, “The reality is that adding blocks and new facilities can only get you this far and rebuilding is needed to make Leighton Hospital to protect for future generations.

“The main buildings are from the 1970s and we need a renovation to handle the significant development effort on the hospital’s doorstep.

“I hope that by working with Fiona and Edward we can get the government to include Leighton in the funding program.

“I would also encourage anyone who has not yet done so to sign the petition.”

Eddisbury MP Timpson added, “Leighton Hospital has looked after residents – including my own family – for generations.

“Now it’s our turn to return the favor and solicit maintenance and rebuilding funding from the government.

“I am proud to work with Kieran and Fiona to support the government’s hospital building program and deliver on our Manifesto pledges.”

Congleton MP Fiona Bruce said: “I am very excited to be supporting this campaign.

“Many citizens use Leighton Hospital and as housing developments grow, that need will only increase.

“It is clear that the current location needs to be improved for both staff and patients.”
