“High chance” of fourth wave of Cheshire East COVID, council chairman claims

According to the council chairman, Cheshire East has a “high likelihood” of a fourth wave of Covid-19 cases if residents do not follow government orders.

Union leader Sam Corcoran made this claim this morning (March 16) via his daily Twitter update.

However, he also said he believes the local pandemic picture will improve this year if vaccines continue to work as effectively as they are now.

Cllr Corcoran said, “With the locally run immunization program going so well, it is natural for people to think about recovering from the pandemic.

“I still think the chances of a fourth wave are high if people don’t follow the basic rules of hand-face space. That is, wash your hands regularly with soap and water, wear a face covering, and stay 2 m apart.

“If there isn’t a vaccine-elusive variant, I think things will improve by the summer.”

Yesterday, Cllr Corcoran used his update to say the infection numbers “are still falling”, adding that “the impact of kids going back to school is showing in the numbers for next week”.

Currently, the rolling 7-day CEC infection rate is 51.8 cases per 100,000 population – less than in England (58.7).

Last week, Cheshire vaccine chiefs said they were “confident” of reaching the top nine priority groups by mid-April.

Data from NHS England also found that 46 percent of adults in Cheshire and Merseyside have now received their first dose of vaccine.
