Huge M62 tailbacks around Cheshire as Morrisons lorry fire closes road

A Morrisons lorry was set on fire on the M62 Eastbound between junction 11 A574 Birchwood Way and junction 12 M60 (Eccles Interchange). All motorway traffic was temporarily held at 4.50pm and the motorway stretch was closed, with congestion is tailing to junction 10 (M6 Croft Interchange).

The motorway was closed until around 5:30pm. Luckily, the driver escaped from the empty trailer unharmed.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: “Firefighters were called to a large vehicle that was well alight on their arrival. The M62 carriageway was closed while the incident was dealt with and crews used three hose reels to extinguish the flames, which involved the cab and a trailer. They set up a shuttle at the incident to get water to the area and were detained for approximately one hour and 20 minutes.”

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: “We can confirm a fire occurred on the M62 involving one of our empty trailers. The driver took prompt action and was able to pull the vehicle over safely and without injury. We are currently liaising with the relevant authorities on the matter.”

Inrix traffic analysis software report: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to vehicle fire on M62 Eastbound between J11 A574 Birchwood Way (Birchwood) and J12 M60 J12 (Eccles Interchange). Traffic has been held since 16:50..”

The scene cleared after emergency surface repairs just after 8pm.
