Police have commented on the cruelty of rustling sheep after at least 45 were stolen earlier this week.
The sheep were stolen from a field near Davenham, Northwich in Cheshire.
PC Tether of the Cheshire Police Department’s Rural Crime Team spoke clearly of the cruelty of the crime.
He said, “PCSO Graham and I participated in a livestock theft report involving (at least) 45 sheep taken from a field near #Davenham #Northwich.
“The cost of theft is over £ 8,000, excluding the cost and time of raising and rearing the lambs.
“Animal theft of any kind is cruel to the farmer who has taken the time to raise his livestock and to the animals that may be mishandled.
“They are often removed in unsuitable and unsuitable vehicles, in violation of animal welfare regulations, and are illegally sold or unethically slaughtered, which poses a risk to the food chain.
“The investigation is ongoing, a number of investigations are being concluded and the area is being reviewed.
“We will continue to stop vehicles carrying cattle and ask the public to report any suspicious activity around your farms or livestock.
“We are particularly interested in identifying cattle wagons or trailers that appear unfamiliar.
“Those involved in cattle theft are treated vigorously by the police and prosecuted for such crimes, including violations of animal welfare and food standards.”
