Scottish government advises against traveling through Cheshire

The Scottish Government has advised against traveling to and from Cheshire.

The latest advice comes after the Scottish government imposed a travel ban on travelers to and from Greater Manchester as the region grapples with a surge in Delta variant cases.

Cheshire, along with other parts of the UK, is currently grappling with a surge in coronavirus cases, mainly driven by the highly transmissible Delta variant (Indian).

Now the Scottish government has advised against traveling to areas where delta variant outbreaks are being treated.

This means that traveling to and from Scotland to Cheshire West and Chester, Cheshire East, Warrington and Halton is not recommended.

The Scottish Government website states: “We do not recommend traveling to any areas in the UK to combat Delta variant outbreaks.

“The UK government publishes a list of areas in England with delta eruptions.

“This advice is in addition to any statutory travel restrictions between Scotland and the specific areas listed below.

“The current travel restrictions between Scotland and the Common Travel Area are as follows: England – Travel to and from Blackburn with Darwen and Bolton is only allowed for legitimate reasons.

“Travel to and from Manchester and Salford will only be allowed from Monday, June 21, 2021 for legitimate reasons.

“There is a detailed list of examples of reasonable excuses in the regulations. No travel restrictions anywhere else in England.”

The move won’t come as a surprise, especially after the recent announcement that Cheshire is set to become an upgraded Covid-19 response area.

As part of the move announced last week, Cheshire is receiving a national expanded support package to encourage local work to deal with a rapid increase in the new Delta variant of COVID-19.

This contains:

  • Dedicated surge rapid response teams: These can be used to support local authorities with logistics, planning and staffing to support measures such as testing and home visits to interact with residents
  • Military assistance to assist local areas with testing, community door-to-door engagement, planning and logistics with decisions made based on local needs, including support from the Nationally Funded Military Aid to Civil Authority (MACA)
  • Supervised in-school tests
  • Wastewater test samples prioritized for sequencing
  • Technical communication support to raise awareness and focus engagement with disadvantaged groups
  • Maximize vaccine uptake by expanding existing facilities, developing new capacities, and improving local and targeted communication
  • Supervised in-school testing and discretion to reintroduce face coverings in school common areas when public health directors deem it appropriate
  • Surge tests and improved contact tracking
  • Enhanced surveillance (genomic sequencing, genotype assay tests)
